ATTENTION
ALL 2009 QUALIFYING COMPETITION COMPETITORS

The deadline for entry into the 2009 Qualifying Competition Season is SEPTEMBER 1, 2008. All competitors, regardless of whether or not their first competition is at the regional championships must register by this deadline. This includes ALL pairs and dance teams who have their first competition at the sectional championships as well as ALL competitors who have or will receive a bye advancing them out of the regional championships!

To complete the registration process, go to www.usfsaonline.org as online registration is the only method in which to enter.

Attention club official:

Beginning July 1, 2008, all coaches will have to comply with the coaches’ registration policy in order to be allowed to instruct/coach during the following sanctioned activities during the 2008-2009 skating season:

·     all qualifying and nonqualifying competitions

·     test sessions

·     all performances including ice shows, exhibitions, recitals and carnivals

·     any other sanctioned club activities

Coaches who are under the age of 18 or instruct only Basic Skills group lessons do not have to register at this time.

U.S. Figure Skating has worked with National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) to ensure that this process is convenient, secure and confidential. The process for screening is simple and generally takes about five minutes. When U.S. Figure Skating receives a ‘Green Light’ from NCSI, and verification of coaches’ liability insurance from each coach, the registration process will be finalized and a U.S. Figure Skating registration card will be issued to the coach.

When do coaches need to begin registering?

Coaches can begin registering now. There is a link from the www.usfigureskating.org homepage for coaches to begin submitting their information. If they are a qualifying level coach taking students to regionals, they must register prior to August 1 to allow enough time processing the background screen. All coaches of qualifying level skaters will also need to be current members of U.S. Figure Skating and PSA to receive a credential.

Does the registration include U.S. Figure Skating membership?

No. The registration is in addition to membership. All coaches will join U.S. Figure Skating either through home club membership or as an individual member as they have done in the past.

What is the cost to register?

$40 plus the cost of coaches liability insurance. (Liability coverage is purchased separately through a carrier of the coach’s choosing.) The coach’s registration fee will cover the costof the background screening and a U.S. Figure Skating rulebook.

Process for the club: Clubs should verify that coaches have successfully registered before allowing them to coach/instruct in sanctioned events. Phase I: A PDF will be updated weekly and posted on the website.  Phase II: Those officers with access to ‘members only’ will have the option to look up a coach and verify registration.  You may also ask to see their registration card at check-in.

If you have additional questions regarding this process, please contact Member Services at 719-635-5200.

U.S. Figure Skating appreciates the cooperation and understanding of all members to help implement this program to ensure that the environment in all U.S. Figure Skating programs is as safe as possible for all participants.

A MESSAGE FROM USFS....

Dear Club President,

In the renewal packet that was mailed in April we included a flyer re: the qualifying competition entry deadline.  Subsequent to that mailing, there were rule changes passed at Governing Council that affect that deadline.  Please see the message below and communicate the information to your members.  Any questions can be directed to Kevin Leonardo at KLeonardo@usfigureskating.org.

REGISTRATION METHODS

Electronic Registration (Preferred Method of Entry)

U.S. Figure Skating highly encourages the use of the online entry system. This has become the preferred method of registration as the majority of the process as a whole has already been moved online. You may enter online into the 2007 qualifying competition season through www.usfsaonline.org. For the purpose of electronic entry, the time zone of your home club will determine the entry deadline of 11:59 p.m., Sept. 1, 2006. Test and age requirements must be met by the deadline listed below.

Paper Entries (Only if online registration is not a viable option – subject to processing fee)

Paper entry forms postmarked on or before August 25, 2006 may be submitted to U.S. Figure Skating by any method that provides evidence that the entry was submitted on or before the deadline, i.e., U.S. Postal Service, UPS, FedEx and the like. (Succeeding business day practice will apply).

Paper entries submitted after August 25 and up to the close of entries on Sept. 1 are TO BE SUBMITTED BY AN OVERNIGHT SERVICE that provides dated evidence of the entry submission, i.e. U.S. Postal Service, UPS, Fed Ex, and the like.

Paper entry forms can be hand delivered to U.S. Figure Skating Headquarters (20 First Street, Colorado Springs) during normal business hours, M-F 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. MT up to and including Sept. 1.

Deadline for tests will remain the same at “close of entries” and would simply mean that a skater choosing to test after that August 25 date MUST either use the online process, hand deliver or submit their entry by OVERNIGHT DELIVERY SERVICE by any of the carriers allowed presently in rule 3212 (US Postal Service, FedEx, UPS, etc).

In accordance with rule 3212, any entry not postmarked in the prescribed manners will not be accepted and the skater will not be permitted to compete.

Each year it takes a considerable amount of time and resources to process the paper entries that are submitted to U.S. Figure Skating Headquarters. Electronic entries are a quicker, easier, and more effective method in which to register for entry into the qualifying competition season. This year, registrations submitted using the paper entry forms will be subject to a $50 processing fee. Please include this additional fee in your registration payment as your entry will not be accepted or processed until this fee is paid.

Thank you.

Doris E. Bodmer
1931 - 2007

Skating champ, coach, judge

By Patricia Trebe
Special to the Tribune

May 8, 2007

Doris Bodmer was only 4 when she put on a pair of ice skates and
immediately found her life's passion.

She advanced from Swiss National figure skating champion to coach to judge, and her devotion to the sport never waned.

For hundreds of her students, many of whom went on to national and world competitions, she was their guiding force.

"She gave me the encouragement and the foundation of my skating to take me to the next level," said former student Becky Search, a member of the 2006 U.S. national championship synchronized skating team. "Mrs. B wanted to see you excel not only as a skater but also as an individual. She instilled a strong work ethic and commitment. She helped foster my desire for the sport through her own words and action."

Mrs. Bodmer, 76, died of multiple myeloma Friday, May 4, in her Downers Grove home.

For 40 years, Mrs. Bodmer was a leader in the ice skating community and a founding member of the DuPage Figure Skating Club, one of the largest in the United States. Her influence continued after she retired from coaching 11 years ago. Mrs. Bodmer volunteered as a judge and also would help any struggling coach or student.

"When she retired she started to judge, and she became famous for her critiques," said Jo-Anne Zalewski, a coach at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge.

"She would come in whenever anyone would call her. ... She would come and look at a skater to see if they were ready to pass [a test] or not. ... In her mothering way -- and she was very kind about it -- she would tell the skater and then she would become a coach again because it was in her nature."

Born an only child in Frankfurt, Germany, Mrs. Bodmer fled the Nazis
with her mother and grandmother. Her father, who was divorced from her mother, stayed behind but she reunited with him later, said her son Edward.

She spent her youth in Arleshiem, Switzerland, where she learned to
skate. In 1953, she won the Swiss Ladies National Title and competed in the World Championships.

During the summer, the Swiss skating rinks were closed so she would live in England. There, she met her husband, Arnold Bodmer.

The couple married in 1956 and remained in Manchester, England, where she had four children within six years.

The family moved to Downers Grove in 1963 so her husband, a nuclear physicist, could work at Argonne National Laboratory near Lemont and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

With no rinks nearby, Mrs. Bodmer's skating career was put on hold.

During this time, she attended Roosevelt University and graduated at the top of her class in 1969. She went on to study German literature at the University of Chicago, receiving a master's degree in 1972.

As rinks began to open, she taught her daughters how to skate and
eventually took on more students.

"She didn't tell anyone she was the Swiss champion," her son said.
"Within a year, she had skaters desperately wanting her to take them."

Before she retired, she coached for 20 years with Cindy Perpich, who saw Mrs. Bodmer handle every age group and type of student with the same compassion.

"She saw the child first, then the skating second," Perpich said. "She
was always able to get the kids to reach their personal best and to see their own potential.

"And the most remarkable thing about her was whether you met her once or you knew her your whole life, you received the same gifts from her. You knew her so well and what she wanted to give as a person, coach, mentor, human being the very minute you met her. She made everyone feel important."

Mrs. Bodmer self-published a book, "How to Raise a Competitive Skater," which went through two printings, her son said.

In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by another son,
Richard; two daughters, Sylvia True and Anne Lutz; and 10 grandchildren.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Unitarian Church of
Hinsdale, 17 W. Maple St.
