Mrs. Doris E. Bodmer

The DuPage Figure Skating Club sadly
regrets the passing of one of its beloved judges, and long time club
member, Doris Bodmer. Fondly
referred to by all in the skating world, “Mrs. B,” touched so many from
her years in coaching and judging in the
Chicago area.
Doris passed away at her home on
May 4th, 2007
after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. For more than 30 years she
taught several generations of young skaters, and was an honored judge
and author of the book, “How to Raise a Competitive Figure Skater.”
Her long time coaching partner Cindy
Perpich said it best, “Mrs. B. was able to coach and befriend all ages
and personalities. It didn’t matter if you knew her for a day or
for 30 years, she gave of herself to every child, every parent.”
When she was diagnosed with cancer she had to slow down, and thus used
her skating knowledge and expertise in judging.
Figure skating always lived in Doris’
soul. Her son Edward said his mother was a natural skater even as
a small child on the frozen ponds and rinks in Switzerland. Doris
continued on and won the Swiss Ladies National title in 1953. She
then moved to London to train and it was there where she met Arnold
Bodmer, a doctoral graduate in nuclear physics. They were married
in 1956 and moved to Manchester England where they started their family
and then in 1963 moved to Downers Grove where she continued to teach
skating. In addition to her work on the ice, Mrs. Bodmer earned a
master’s degree from the University of Chicago. She is survived by
her husband of more than 50 years, Arnold Bodmer; children Edward (Jill)
Bodmer, Sylvia (Donald) True, Richard (Tula) Bodmer and Anne (John)
Lutz; her brothers-in-law and ten grandchildren.
