Dear (TITLE) (FULL NAME) (ie. Principal John Smith),

As President of DuPage Figure Skating Club (the largest in the country) and as an active official for the United Skates Figure Skating Association, I wanted to make you aware of a very important upcoming event in which one of your students, (FULL NAME), will be participating: the Upper Great Lakes Regional Championships. These will be held on October ??-??, 200? in CITY, STATE. These annual championships are the first steps toward competing at a national level! Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, Scott Hamilton, to name a few, all began their climb to the Olympics through these regional competitions.

Unfortunately, the timing of this qualifying event, which is the same for all regions across the country, will require (FIRST NAME) to miss close to a week of school. I am writing this letter with the hope that you will be supportive of this absence. We encourage getting advanced materials from (FIRST NAME)'s teachers to insure critical academic lessons are not missed.

Becoming a championship figure skater requires dedication to a self-imposed regimen of physical fitness and the unswerving pursuit of perfection. (FIRST NAME) is an athlete in every sense of the word. Our current champions spend 4 to 6 hours per day training with the myriad of coaches and assistants needed to ready them for their competitive levels. The Upper Great Lakes Championships is the place to showcase this incredible effort.

In many instances it has been shown that skaters typically improve their academic standing because they are self-motivated largely through the discipline they have acquired through figure skating. (FIRST NAME) has shown the commitment to the endless hours of tough practice required to even be able to compete in the Upper Great Lakes Championships. It is my hope that you will continue to encourage that commitment and partner with (HIM / HER) to insure a full academic workload is accomplished as well. (FIRST NAME)'s ultimate successes will positively reflect on your school.

Thank you,

Ms. Jan Serafine
President of the DuPage Figure Skating Club
